Located at 1860 meters above sea level on a plateau on the south face, this area enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. It is also known as "l'Ile du Soleil" (Island of the sun). The highest point, "the Pic Blanc" offers a panoramic view of 1/5th of the French territory with a view of Mont Blanc, Mont Ventou, the Central Massif, Switzerland and Italy

The beautiful setting is ideal for practicing many sports including hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing and paragliding. In summer, there are many events: l'Alpe d’Huzes, the Marmotte, the Megavalanche, the Etape du Tour Vélo Mondo, the Triathlon, and French Supermotard Championship. With its renowned 21 hairpin turns, the Alpe d'Huez climb is one of the most famous stages of the Tour de France. On the panels in the corners of each turn are the names of the stage winners through a "countdown" displayed.

Alpe d'Huez has a long series of 27 stage winners in the Tour de France. From Fausto Coppi in 1952 to Pierre Rolland in 2011, Alpe d'Huez hosts a collection of names of legendary champions.

Joop Zoetemelk, Hennie Kuipers, Peter Winnen (2 times each), Steven Rooks and Gert Jan Teunissen’s cycling histories are written here so we still hear some of the chauvinistic “Dutch mountain "speech. This epic battle to the top was also fought by, among others, Bernard Hinault, Luis Herrera, Laurent Fignon, Marco Pantani, and Lance Armstrong. Which active cyclist is not up to the challenge of the great champions of this mountain with its 21 hairpin bends?

In the Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine are 250 km of marked mountain bike routes for all abilities, so that both beginners and advanced riders can have the ride of their lives!
